About 10 minutes ago, I was notified of my acceptance at James Madison University (where I had been on the waitlist). Sure this is great, except for the fact that I've already committed at George Mason University. The reason I'm asking you guys is because I want your opinions. I'm planning on majoring in biology if I go to Mason, and biotechnology if I go to James Madison, and was wondering which one would be the better choice (in terms of college, major, or both), since I still have time to change (losing the deposit money however...). Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it.

It's time to kick the savages out of office, or keep them from getting in, your choice. Here are places to vote in Los Alamos:

Here's a map in case you forget where you live:

According to this county page, polling runs from 7am to 7pm.

I currently have a Netflix membership with the $9.99/1 at a time plan and it looks like the average turn around time is about 4 days. So, I end up with 4 movies/month which is not bad but nothing great either. I am trying to figure out if this is one of the perks of living in a small town or if it is Netflix imposed throttle.

Does anybody have a better turnaround time than this? Or has anyone tried Blockbuster and had a better/worse experience?

Apparently, you no longer have to license your pets in Los Alamos.  The county changed this a couple weeks ago without telling anyone.  When asked why they didn't mention it, they said that they didn't want to send the entire statute to people.  When asked why they didn't just send that change out, we were met with blank stares.

Enjoy.

Are there any running trails that are longer than 1 mile and relatively stone and cactus free?

Thanks!

I created this community a year ago under my previous pseudonym, madwomanrising, and while it hasn't become the resource I was hoping, it is still something to be proud of for both myself and each of you who have joined. So, I thought I would let you all in on my plans for the community and get your thoughts on it, after all a community is only as strong as its members. I truly have no excuse for not to working to make this community better.

The easy part will be a design over-haul. I've never been fond of the overrides system here at LJ and have been avoiding doing a site redesign for that reason. Well, after some work I have a design almost complete. I will have it up, hopefully, by the middle of the week. I'd really like to get some feedback on it when it's complete. This design will allow for better navigation and more ways to have information available to the community members.

The second part of my plan will take a bit more work and dedication. Not just from myself but from everyone. I do hope that you will all be willing to take part in this. The community is in a sad state of disrepair, with postings being made about bits and pieces perhaps once a month. What I am proposing is a weekly, if not daily posting schedule to post daily news, events and the like. I created this as a way to keep people up to date on what happens in the community and I really should have kept to that idea.

I know there are a fair number of you that are still at the high school. I am looking for a volunteer willing to post the goings on of the high school. Anyone? And the same for the lab, though I know there may well not be anyone here. If that is the case I would love to find anyone willing to post articles or information from the lab's online news site.

Lastly, please advertise to those you know. I'm not saying to spam other communities but I'd really like to see this site pick up off the ground. The community is available to non-LJ members to view as is comments. You all know that you have to be an LJ member to post to any community so that's just something we've got to deal with.

So, for now, that's it and honestly, it's going to take enough work to get this much done. So, dear community members, your thoughts?

Well folks, there's been another suicide. I found out today while I was at the EOC that LAPD was called to a suicide scene on ski hill early today. As late as three they hadn't even identified if it had been a male or female. I'm sure they know who it is by now. I haven't heard anything else as all my connections are LANL-based. The dispatch for both LAFD and LAPD are at the lab EOC so if I find out more I will post it.

Things like this always make the day rather somber. I hope that this mess isn't connected to anyone here but if it is, please know that my best wishes are with you.

You guys ought to come to the LASO concert tonight. It's at 7 at IHM Catholic Church and it costs 8 dollar students and 10 dollars adults. I sit in the very back. We're playing Bizet, Liszt (sp), and Mozart.

I often get asked about the entertainment possibilities for single people in Los Alamos, so I thought I'd post a bunch of things that I know about:

1. Take courses through the UNM Community Education program. They have exercise classes, foreign languages plus lots more. http://commed.losalamos.com/

2. The Art Center at Fuller Lodge offers classes in pottery, tie-dyeing, mat-cutting etc.

3. Betty Ehart Senior Cente has some dance classes.

4. A knitting group meets at the Library every Tuesday (7-8:30 pm)

5. Fitness classes at the YMCA

6. Mesa Public Library shows free movies once in a while. Also, there are poetry readings, art/photo exhibitions etc.

7. Pajarito Astronomers have sky-observation sessions every month. http://pajaritoastronomers.org/index.html

8. Movies at Reel Deal

9. Plays at the Los Alamos Little Theatre.

Please feel free to add to this list.

10. Heavy drinking (Anon)

11. somberandsolace says Concerts. There is the summer concert series and the classical music series (I'll update with the correct name when I remember what it's called)

12. chickyboo suggests http://visit.losalamos.com/events/

Does anyone here work at the Reel Deal theater? I would very much like to see the movie Serenity here in Los Alamos.  I'm a big Firefly fan so I will drive to Albuquerque if necessary.  Does the movie theater take requests?  Every time I have asked them about this in the past they've seemed annoyed.

If you haven't checked out Firefly, you should.  :)

I am looking for hardy plants for indoors. Any recos? I checked in Smith's and they have several of these potted plants that require high humidity levels.

I find cactii a little drab except for the flowering type.
